Weekly News from Polkadot & Kusama #146
1. Agile Coretime launches on Polkadot, paving the way for Elastic Scaling and cost-effective access
Polkadot has officially launched Agile Coretime, a key component of Polkadot 2.0, offering increased flexibility, scalability, and accessibility for builders. The feature allows projects of all sizes to access resources more easily and cost-effectively.
Larger projects can leverage Bulk Coretime for up to 28 days of continuous computational resources, while smaller projects benefit from On-Demand Coretime. With Agile Coretime live, Polkadot enables Elastic Scaling, eliminating bottlenecks and enhancing efficiency. This marks a major step towards Polkadot 2.0 and a decentralized internet.

2. Polkadot increases the number of validators to 400 for enhanced security, Nakamoto Coefficient jumped by 20 points
Polkadot’s referendum 1129 has been approved, increasing the validator set size from 297 to 400. This change enhances both security and decentralization within the network, allowing for up to 4000 validator candidates. The expansion aims to strengthen Polkadot’s infrastructure and support a more robust ecosystem, promoting greater participation and resilience across the network.
As a result, the Nakamoto Coefficient for Polkadot jumped by ~20 points to 112, boosting decentralization, security, and nominator flexibility.
3. Web3 Foundation launches 3rd cohort of Decentralized Voices program
In February 2024, Web3 Foundation Team launched the Decentralized Voices program to empower the Polkadot and Kusama communities by delegating DOT and KSM to active voters. After two successful cohorts, applications for Cohort 3 are now open until 29 September. Selected delegates will serve a four-month term, contributing to the governance of both networks and getting rewarded in DOT & KSM.
Notably, Cohort 3 combines DOT and KSM voting power into a single program, reducing the number of delegates to five. Applicants must demonstrate significant participation in governance and provide a public declaration of their political philosophy.
4. PolkadotKit secures Web3 Foundation’s Decentralized Futures grant to revolutionize mobile Web3 integration
The Web3 Foundation has awarded another Decentralized Futures grant to PolkadotKit, a project by Finsig, aiming to enhance mobile integration with Web3 technology.
PolkadotKit is developing native light client packages for iOS and Android, allowing direct integration of smoldot into mobile apps without third-party frameworks. By using a Foreign Function Interface (FFI), PolkadotKit will streamline the creation of decentralized applications on mobile platforms.
Finsig plans to expand this project further, leveraging additional funding for complete SDKs in Swift and Kotlin, aiming to drive broader adoption in the Web3 ecosystem.
5. Polkadot announced as a gold sponsor of European Blockchain Convention: September 25–26 in Barcelona
Polkadot was announced as a sponsor for the 10th European Blockchain Convention. Join Polkadot, Energy Web and others in Barcelona on 25–26 September for EBC Week. EBC week runs from September 23–29.
6. STEPN creator FSL partners with Mythos Foundation to revolutionize Web3 gaming and esports
FSL, the creator of STEPN, has partnered with Mythos Foundation to advance esports and Web3 gaming. The collaboration aims to integrate Mythos Chain with FSL’s platforms, enhancing user experiences through co-branded assets.
This partnership focuses on promoting decentralization and uniting both communities under a shared vision for the future of Web3 gaming. Exciting releases, such as a supercar-inspired sneaker for STEPN, are set to follow, highlighting the innovation and potential of this groundbreaking initiative.
