Polkadot Governance News #23 OCT24: Rebranding Parachains to Polkadot Rollups in Play

--

Welcome to another edition of Polkadot Governance News. Do you know that we started a new series aimed at the work of the Technical Fellowship? Just check out our 1st edition of Fellowship News as well then.

Let's get back to governance. What do you think about changing the name of parachains to Polkadot Rollups? Is it an interesting idea or useless? Whatever you believe, you can say it on the Polkadot forum, because it's one of the actual hot topics brought by Filippo Franchini.

1. Referenda Digest

1. Polkadot Referenda 1245: Draper University x Polkadot Pre-Accelerator Silicon Valley

  • Draper University proposes a pre-accelerator program to develop builders and entrepreneurs for the Polkadot ecosystem, offering early-stage startups essential resources, education, capital, and networking opportunities.
  • The program will feature a residency at Draper University in Silicon Valley, targeting startups in Web3 sectors like AI, Real World Assets, and Gaming. It will culminate in a demo day for investors.
  • It will be delivered in two phases, requiring minimal technical support from Polkadot for developer support and workshops.
  • Requested amount: 438.6K USDC

Polkadotters Opinion: Silicon Valley’s Web3 scene falls short compared to regions such as New York or Florida. Also, the impact of Draper University on other chains remains unclear, so we don't think it's worth the price tag. NAY.

2. Polkadot Referenda 1229: Polkadot Ecosystem Branding Exposure at Bitcoin.com

  • Bitcoin.com seeks support for a year-long educational and marketing campaign featuring Polkadot, including lifetime coverage in the Learning Center, in-depth articles, interviews, and live sessions.
  • The campaign will also highlight Polkadot in Bitcoin.com’s Weekly Newsletter, reaching over 3 million subscribers, producing 7 articles, 10 educational threads, 9 newsletter features, 6 podcast series, and 10 branded spotlight stories, including quarterly reports to evaluate the campaign’s impact.
  • Requested amount: 240,000 USDT

Polkadotters Opinion: In our opinion, advertising on Bitcoin.com may not effectively target the right audience for Polkadot end users and/or developers. NAY.

2. Community Spotlight

In the Community Spotlight, we focus on key members of the Polkadot ecosystem commenting on recent referenda.

In this edition, we are joined by Saxemberg, a delegate from both the 1st and 2nd cohorts of the Decentralised Voices programme. In addition to OpenGov's strong commitment, Saxemberg is a Polkadot & Kusama validator.

Let’s have a look at Saxemberg's opinion on the ref. 1223, Florida Blockchain Business Association (FBBA) Sponsorship to Improve Polkadot’s Presence In the U.S..

Saxemberg: “Simply put, this will allow Polkadot to be in the same room with other key players in the industry, mirroring a similar initiative in Texas for Web3-friendly policies.

While building regulatory connections is beneficial, concerns remain as previous efforts in Texas (see ref. 675) have yet to yield clear results. Effective results are critical to justify continued support beyond regulatory discussions.

We voted AYE, but have concerns about the measurable impact. Concrete results of these partnerships must come out of these efforts.”

1. Renaming “Parachains” to a More Generic Term such as “Polkadot Rollups“

Filippo Franchini suggests renaming “Parachains” to “Polkadot Rollups” to reflect the ecosystem’s evolution and prepare for future updates like JAM. The term “rollups” could improve visibility, align Polkadot with industry trends, and make it easier to understand and compare with other blockchain solutions, enhancing SEO and accessibility.

The idea also involves gradually replacing “parachains” with “rollups” in documentation, retaining “parachains” where necessary.

This shift would help future-proof Polkadot while making the technology clearer to developers and stakeholders. Filippo is encouraging community input to gauge support before taking the idea to a wider Wish for Change referendum for possible implementation.

2. Building the Future of Decentralized AI with Jam

Cyphertux proposes using JamChain’s decentralized architecture to overcome current blockchain limitations and enable scalable, secure, and efficient management of large-scale AI models.

3. A way to do quadratic funding in polkadot

Yongfeng Li proposes introducing quadratic funding to Polkadot’s treasury system to reduce the influence of whales, improve fairness, and encourage broader community participation in funding decisions while addressing challenges like Sybil attacks and incentivizing donations.

4. Incorporating native Move smart contracts into Polkadot

PolkadotLeader advocates for integrating the Move smart contract language into Polkadot, emphasizing its enhanced security, formal verification capabilities, and superior scalability compared to Solidity, thus positioning Move as a forward-thinking choice for developing decentralized applications that can effectively address future blockchain challenges.

4. Meme Time

It's time to rebrand the logo of the Asset Hub. At least according to Saxemberg

Delegate your DOT or KSM to Polkadotters for easy participation in the on-chain governance via Talisman or Nova wallet

  • Strengthen Polkadot by nominating your DOT tokens to POLKADOTTERS, community builders for the Polkadot ecosystem
  • Support Polkadotters Shrimp and Polkadotters Octopus on Polkadot and be a part of a more secure Web3 future
